All right, y’all—this week I’m kicking off a brand new build series, and my uncle Chris kinda one-upped me. He picked up a 2025 4th Gen Tacoma iForce Max TRD Off-Road, and we’re turning it into an overland truck camper over the next few months. The first big move is getting an all-new OpenRoad 4WD aluminum topper put together and installed, and I walk you through what shows up in the crate, what’s already assembled, and what you actually have to bolt together. We brought everything into the shop (because it was freezing outside), followed the step-by-step instructions, and got the modular panels assembled with all the included stainless hardware, gasket material, and sealant. I also show the little tools and details that make it go together clean—like masking off the seams and using the included bead tool so the topper ends up sealed and (once cured) weathertight. After that, we bolted on the optional roof rails so he can run a rooftop tent later, then we set the cap on the truck with just the two of us. I cover the batwing side doors, MOLLE-style panels inside and out, the bolt-on factory bed-track mounting, and one 4th Gen Tacoma fitment note: we had to trim the gasket because of that big factory bed-rail kick-up lip. This is just the start—next we’ll build it out with the full camper setup.
