This week on the 5x8 cargo trailer camper build (Part 10), I finally got to the point where it starts looking like what I’ve had in my head the whole time. I knocked out a bunch of the inside work in stages—insulation first, then wiring routes, then wall panels—because I didn’t want to close anything up until I knew all the wires, vents, and lines were where they needed to be. I went with 1-inch foam board insulation because my walls are 1-inch square tubing, so it fits flush, seals up tight, and by the time the ceiling and underside get done, we’ll be able to “hang meat” in this thing. The rear outdoor kitchen is really starting to get functional now: walls are up, lights are in, the sink is set, and the ICECO chest fridge is mounted on a slide so I can still reach the controls and pop the lid even with everything tucked in. I kept the factory side vent so the fridge can breathe when the trailer is shut up, and I built a simple sliding door setup so I don’t have to fight swing-out doors in a tight space. Inside, my flip-up table is in (perfect for my wife’s MacBook setup), the TV and fireplace area is taking shape, and I’m framing in the airflow system that’ll pump heat/AC up into the rooftop tent through that hatch. I also address the weight/axle questions: this single axle is rated for 2,150 lbs and the trailer GVWR is around 3,000 lbs, and I’m nowhere near that—but I’m still paying attention to side-to-side balance. Next steps are floor patches, trim (because this trailer is not square), wiring, plumbing, and then getting the tent and mattress mod dialed in for a real maiden voyage test.
