About This Video

All right, y’all—this video was supposed to be a simple “let’s hit the water and test the new switch panel, lights, pumps, and wiring” kind of day on my 1999 Nitro NX882. I rewired the whole boat, added a push-button panel, added a pump-out feature for the livewell, and I was ready to run some old gas out of the tank and do a legit water test. But once I got out there, the boat wouldn’t crank unless I was full throttle, it smelled like fuel, and I even saw a rainbow sheen around the motor. So I pulled the cowling off in the middle of the lake and found a problem that can absolutely leave you stranded. That “serviceable” inline fuel filter I had installed had vibrated loose and was dumping gas all inside the cowling. I’m honestly lucky it didn’t catch fire. That mess led me down the rabbit hole of why this Merc 150 two-stroke has never idled right, and I ended up finding the real culprit: broken reed valves—one missing and several chipped, especially down low, which explains why the bottom carb was actually blowing out instead of sucking in. Once I knew compression was solid (120 PSI across the board basically), I went after the biggest comfort upgrade on these old boats: swapping the stiff rack-and-pinion cable steering to a Vevor hydraulic steering kit. The goal is simple—make it steer like butter and bring this old rig into the new world.
