BJO (Vallejo) finally released an XPRESS Color Starter Set, and they asked me to take a proper look at it—so in this video I unbox it and then I actually paint a miniature with what’s inside. I also took part in the development of these paints, so I was genuinely curious to see what color selection they went for. The set includes a leaflet guide, a synthetic detail size 1 brush (quite large, which is great for beginners), a pre-primed miniature you can paint straight out of the box, and a really solid spread of XPRESS colors like Templar White, Imperial Yellow, Velvet Red, Mystic Blue, Orc Skin, Serpent Green (one of my absolute favorites), Willow Bark, and Hospitaller Black. Then I put it to the test on a real subject instead of just following the box scheme. Even without a dedicated flesh tone, I mix one using Willow Bark + Velvet Red + Imperial Yellow (and a tiny bit of water), and I explain the logic: flesh is basically a desaturated orange. I also show quick fixes (wipe paint fast if you slip), simple glazing for face warmth, and how far you can push a limited palette. For metallics, I use a minimal setup (gold and steel) and shade them using the set paints thinned down like a wash—Hospitaller Black for steel and Willow Bark for gold. End result: fast, clean, and honestly impressive for a starter box.
