Yellow couldn’t be easier to paint. In this Zero Skill episode I show you how I paint a rich, saturated yellow armour scheme in basically three steps, using a bit of color theory and letting the pre-shade do the heavy lifting. We start from a white spray, then I lay down a pink-tinted pre-shade (Twilight Rose heavily thinned with Express Medium). Pink is an amazing base for yellow because when the yellow hits those pink recesses, the shadows become deep and warm instead of dirty and chalky. Once that’s dry, I fix my own mistake and remind you: block in the areas that will be black and white before you drybrush, because the drybrush has to catch every detail. Then it’s a simple white drybrush (satin white is ideal, or you can varnish satin for better flow). After that, the yellow is just a mix of Dreadnought Yellow and Imperial Yellow (honestly, Dreadnought Yellow alone works great), plus a dark helmet blue mix (Mystic Blue + a touch of black), a very thin Space Grey “wash” over the whites, and Black Lotus for the blacks—which feels like cheating. Finally, I show optional upgrades: a single Toxic Yellow edge highlight on the armour, and quick stipple/glaze highlights on the helmet up to Verdigris. Fast, repeatable, and perfect for painting armies.
