There are times in this hobby where everything seems to go wrong… and this was one of those times. In this video I paint my first STARCRAFT tabletop miniature (a massive, really cool unit) to celebrate the official launch of the Starcraft tabletop miniatures game. I start with an easy, fast workflow: a simple airbrush triad (black to grey) to set the values, a faint pure-white drybrush to catch the edges, and then I tint the blue areas with Speedpaints. After that I hit the metallic details with Game Color Silver—still my favorite silver paint. Then I go into my oil stage, but not as a “normal wash”. I want the oils to tint and color the surface, so I apply them heavier than usual (gray + faded navy, plus Payne’s Gray, and I even desaturate it with a bit of engine grease to get a nice chromatic black). I clean it back with makeup sponges… and that’s when the disaster happens: the paint lifts off the primer. I show you exactly what went wrong and how to fix it (yes: varnish before oils), using liquid mask to protect the blue, redoing the black, and getting back on track without stripping the whole model. From there it’s the fun part: sponge chipping, dark chips inside the light ones, a touch of rust wash, and finally the glowing cables and lights with white underpainting and a bright Speedpaint mix. The big takeaway: we all make mistakes—the difference is learning how to fix them and moving on.
