About This Video

Hello fellow of the blue—welcome to another basing video. In this one I show you how I make those Warhammer Quest: Darkwater bases, and yes, they’re distinct enough that the process is actually worth doing properly. I start from a finished miniature and build the whole base from scratch: a smooth layer of Milliput over the plastic (and yes, as is tradition, I mix way too much). Milliput is the key here—don’t use green stuff for this job—because I want a surface I can texture into flowing, rippling water. The trickiest part is getting Milliput to behave, because it doesn’t really want to stick to plastic or paint. I do it little by little with my fingers (tools don’t help me here), clean the edges, and then—this is the fun bit—use a dry metal tool with no water to drag out material and create directional ripples. After that I add “moss” patches with basing paste in random spots, feather the edges with an old brush, and let everything cure. Painting is a simple but controlled recipe: a 1:1 Sons of Horus Green + Sybarite Green base, an Incubi Darkness wash cut with Lahmian Medium (1:5), sponge back the base color, then a Screaming Skull drybrush on the sandy textures. I finish with targeted glazes, darken the sand if needed with Nuln Oil/Oblivion Black, add a bit of yellowy variation, and finally tufts—remember kids, you have to paint your tufts.
