In this Zero Skill episode I’m painting one of my favourite colour schemes ever: Death Guard, Horus Heresy style. The whole point is to get incredible results with the easiest, most straightforward steps possible, using Express paints and a couple of simple tricks. I start from a basic zenithal prime (grey spray, white from above) so you don’t need an airbrush at all—spray cans are more than enough. From there I lay down the armour with a mix of two parts Back of Bones and one part Express Medium to keep it lighter, then I take advantage of the longer drying time: I absorb the excess paint in the undersides and even wipe a bit off the upper areas. Yes—your finger is genuinely a great tool if you’re quick, and then I feather edges with a clean, damp brush. For the green panels I use Commando Green (it’s perfect for Death Guard), and then I push the fun part: grime, rust streaks and filters with Wasteland Brown and a subtle Plague Green glaze. Finally I skip “classic” highlights and go straight into chipping—white chips first, then dark chips with Muddy Ground—before finishing the shoulder pad highlights with Dirty Gray and Dead Flesh mixes. Simple, fast, and honestly one of the best results I’ve had in the series.
