About This Video

In this video I do a proper Slapchop experiment: same minis, same paints on top, but I change the undercolor to see how much it actually affects the final result. The starting point is simple—white primer, a single coat of thinned wash as the undercolor, and then a quick white drybrush over everything. From there I focus on the most “sensitive” areas: skin, bone/dirty white, and red, because those transparent colors are where underpainting really shows. I test undercolors like green, purple, blue, and a few more standard ones, and the big surprise is how subtle the differences can be once the whole model is finished. Subtle doesn’t mean pointless though—those small shifts give you really nice variation across an army without changing your recipe. For skin, green is dramatic (sometimes too much), blue gives super desaturated dark shadows, and purple makes the shadows look deep and cool. The real winners for me are purple and—especially—necrosis green. Purple does something magical with my bone mix (bone + lots of medium), pushing it into a natural warm off-white. But necrosis green is my favorite overall: the bone pops, the reds get deep shadows, and even flat faces look more contrasty. What did we learn? Maybe nothing. Did we have fun? I certainly did.
