I have a confession to make: I’d never painted a Bolt Action miniature in my life… so in this video I fix that, and I show you how my Zero Skill method translates beautifully to historicals. This one is an Imperial Japanese soldier, and even though the commission piece will end up as display standard, the early stages are perfect to demonstrate how you can get a really convincing result with very few steps. I start from a zenithal done with two spray cans: British Uniform all over, then white from the top. Then I add definition with a super subtle wash: about one part Willow Bark to ten parts Express Medium. I’m doing this over a brown base instead of black because black desaturates too much and can push everything colder, which I don’t want here. After that, a very light white drybrush brings back a few key highlights (face, hands, hat rim), and then it’s just Express Color layers: skin (Tan Skin + medium), uniform (Military Yellow + Rotten Flesh for that greenish Japanese hue), leathers (Mahogany), extra greens for gear, and finally True Metallic Metal gold details with Arcane Gold. Fast, simple, and it looks amazing for the work put in—let’s get cracking.
