Hello fellows of the blue. In this video I kick off my first paint guide from the new Warhammer Quest box that Games Workshop kindly sent me, and I go straight into my classic heavy contrast style on Inara Sion. I start from a white spray and I follow a simple rule that saves you a lot of mistakes: paint from the lowest layer upwards. So we begin with the skin (Guilliman Flesh), then I add warmth and variation with thin glazes of Magos Purple on the nose, cheeks, ears and knuckles, and I sharpen the facial definition with a touch of Cygor Brown for eyes and mouth before pushing the highlights with my yellow-and-white mixes. From there I move into black hair with Black Templar, and I show you how I like to highlight it thinking like NMM: highlights in bands that follow the curve, using a slightly purple family to create color contrast against the green dress. The dress is a big part of the video: I build an off-white-to-green fade with feathering (fast, clean gradients if you do it slowly in sections), pick out the filigree with precise greens, and then I keep the white dress readable with patient Ulthuan Grey glazing and sparse pure white. Finally I knock out the small details: quick leather with warm, orangey highlights, an annoying-but-cool water/magic effect using a drybrush-first approach, and then steel and gold with simple, effective shading mixes—plus a TMM pattern on the sword so it reads bright on one edge and dark on the other.
