In this episode of Heavy Contrast, I’m testing something a bit cheeky: can we get a convincing chrome NMM look using contrast-type paints? I’m painting the Mechazoid Sokorentai from Corvus Belli (Infinity), starting from a black spray and a simple zenithal with white. The model is basically three colours—white, black and red—so the whole approach is about being neat, preserving the pre-shade, and putting time only where it actually matters. For the red I use a mix of Flesh Tearers Red + Blood Angels Red + Express Medium to keep it as matte as possible and keep that smooth gradient. Blacks are mostly Black Templar, but for the weapons I work smarter: quick white drybrush to catch the edges, then a thin Black Templar glaze so the highlight shows through—no point edge-highlighting a million weapon edges when they’re not the focus. The “chrome” is the fun part: I shade the white using Wasteland Brown for downward planes and Starship Steel (plus a stronger glaze of Mystic Blue + Starship Steel) for upward planes, then finish with crisp off-white to pure white highlights. Fast, controlled, and surprisingly effective.
