In this video I sit down with the AK Interactive QUICK GEN set and do the thing we all secretly love: watching paint dry. AK sent me the full combo, so I’m testing 79 QUICK GEN paints plus the medium, and I’m following the order printed on the back of the box. I’m using a dry palette (no wet palette) because I don’t want to introduce variables, and I’m mixing the bottles really, really well—some of these have serious pigment sitting at the bottom. My big takeaway is that the range is a bit of a weird one: there are paints I absolutely love (some of the deep, transparent high-intensity colors are fantastic), and others that feel redundant—especially the amount of yellows and some of the blue-grays. The best feature, by far, is the intensity rating printed on the droppers, because the biggest problem with “contrast-style” paints is not knowing how they’ll behave. That said, I did find some inconsistencies in how those intensity labels match the feel/coverage. I also go into consistency (some are thick and sticky—dark leather is a proper thick boy), and I share my honest opinion on the metallic QUICK GEN paints: I’m not really sold on the concept compared to a normal metallic basecoat plus a wash. I’ll do more testing on an actual miniature in a follow-up, but this video gives you the full first-pass swatch and my immediate impressions.
