In a house full of smart lights, locks, voice assistants, and robots doing everything from mowing to vacuuming, my old “dumb” 75-gallon tank water heater just wasn’t cutting it anymore. It took up a huge chunk of our utility closet and it was constantly keeping a big tank of water hot 24/7—whether we were home, on vacation, or anything in between. On top of that, it was always burning propane, and with its age I was getting more and more worried about the day it decides to rust out and start leaking. So in this video I walk through upgrading to the Rheem Ikonic super high-efficiency tankless propane water heater. It’s a much smaller unit, it’s rated for 11.2 gallons per minute, and the big win for me is that it’s smart—meaning hot water can finally be part of the smart home instead of this always-on metal box in the corner. I’ll also share the real-world install details: I had a pro handle it (gas, plumbing, electrical), we had to move propane and water lines, add an outlet, reuse the exhaust vent but add a fresh air vent, and I still need to add a condensate pump because it produces more condensate than I expected. From removal to Wi‑Fi setup, the whole job took about a day—roughly 8 hours.
