If you have kids, you know the scene: lights left on, the fan running, and nobody in the bathroom. In this video I tackled my son’s bathroom that was totally out of hand, and instead of just making it “smart,” I made it self-managing. The whole goal is simple—no one has to think. The bathroom reacts to my son’s actions automatically, so the lights, fan, and even leak protection handle themselves. I used Zooz 800 Long Range Z-Wave gear with Home Assistant as the brains: a ZSE41 door sensor, a ZSE42 leak sensor, and three switches (ZEN77 dimmer for vanity lights, ZEN76 for the fan light, and the heavy-duty ZEN75 for the exhaust fan). Then I built automations for daytime vs. nighttime lighting (25% overnight, 100% during the day), humidity-based exhaust fan control (only when we’re on grid power), and smart shutoff logic so everything turns off after no motion/door activity. Finally, I added leak detection that waits 30 seconds, announces over Google Homes, and shuts off the house water valve for real peace of mind.
