About This Video

Let’s be honest: stumbling into the bathroom at 3:00 a.m. and stubbing your toe is no fun at all. In this video I fix that nighttime nightmare the “Josh’s Smart Home” way—by combining GE Cync Direct Connect smart LED light strips with the Aqara FP2 mmWave presence sensor and pulling it all into Home Assistant. I installed 32 feet of underbed lighting (two separate strips so I can control left and right independently) and used Matter to make color and brightness control dead simple right inside Home Assistant. The real magic is the Aqara FP2 zones. Unlike a basic motion sensor that freaks out every time you roll over, the FP2 lets me define areas like “Josh side,” “Sarah side,” and the foot of the bed, so the lights only come on where someone is actually standing. My spouse-approved automation turns on warm white at 10% only when it’s dark (I started with a 100 lux threshold), and turns off when the zone clears. Then I take it to the next level: underbed lighting becomes a silent whole-home notification system. Red strobing for alarm triggers, blue for water leaks, and green for doorbell presses—clear, practical, and no announcements needed.
