About This Video

Traditional wired floodlight cams can be awesome for security… until you realize you don’t have power where you need it. Then you’re either crawling through the attic running wire or paying an electrician more than the camera costs, which just doesn’t make sense. In this video I tested the Reolink Solar Floodlight Cam, an all-in-one unit with an integrated solar panel, no monthly subscription, and a claimed 1000-lumen floodlight that’s supposed to “turn night into day.” I unboxed it, walked through what you get, and then installed it with basically two screws—if you can operate a drill, you can install this thing. I mounted it out on a tree near our trampoline where we have no power, and I used the long-range Wi-Fi to keep it connected. At night, motion detection was snappy with almost no lag, the light was genuinely aggressive (in a good deterrence way), and color night vision makes it much easier to identify clothing colors or car details. The big question was battery life. After about two weeks—including lots of cloudy/rainy days and a pretty insane timelapse test pinging it constantly—I was still at 78%. For most people, this feels like a legit “set and forget” solar security option, and if you ever need to top it off, you can charge it via USB-C right on the camera. Bonus: I also show how I’m controlling it in Home Assistant through the HomeHub Pro for automations based on person/vehicle/animal detection.
