About This Video

For a little while I’d been smelling gasoline while driving, and it got worse the longer I was on the road. No warning lights, no misfires, and my fuel economy was actually better than ever—so I’ll be honest, I was tempted to ignore it. But when you’ve got fuel fumes in the engine bay, that’s not “maybe later” territory. It was also slow to start in the morning, sometimes taking two or three key cycles, which told me fuel was bleeding off somewhere. In this video I walk you through how I diagnosed it on my 3.6 using a two-way articulating borescope (yes, a new toy… I mean tool). Before taking anything apart, I could see dampness on the passenger side and fuel pooling on the back of the intake area. Once I pulled the upper intake, the “stupid problem” revealed itself: a missing fuel rail bolt, and the broken bolt was sitting there like a shiny little clue. The rail was able to bounce around, the injector area was wet, and it was a legit fire risk. The best part? The Jeep community saved my butt. A friend connected me with a shop that had a 3.6 sitting there, and I was able to grab a lower intake, fuel rail, injectors, and more—same day. New seals, even gaps, no more gas smell, and a big reminder: don’t be afraid to ask for help, because this community shows up.
