About This Video

In this video I’m working on my own JK and fixing something that’s been bugging me for years: carrying an oversized spare without turning the back of the Jeep into a sagging, heavy mess. I ran a Smittybilt Atlas rear bumper for about six years to support my Gobi rack and overland gear, and over time the whole setup started to droop—tire hanging low, towing felt off, and the Jeep was sitting so low it was basically living on the bump stops. I still wanted to keep my 37, but I also didn’t want a massive steel bumper with a big swing-arm carrier. So I walk you through a simpler solution: a heavy-duty aluminum hinge reinforcement + spare tire carrier kit (the kind a lot of brands sell, and I grabbed mine off Amazon). I explain why hanging a 35/37/40 on the factory door setup is asking for trouble—sheet metal fatigue, sagging, hard-to-close doors, and even ripping the metal. Then I show the full install step-by-step (because this kit shows up with basically zero directions): tools you’ll need, why I prefer factory bolts for cleaner fit/finish, how to set the tire height, how to press in studs for your bolt pattern, and the “solo lift” trick for getting a 150-lb tire onto the mount. I also cover planning for accessories like a third brake light, ham antenna, and an aftermarket backup camera before you bury wiring behind the brackets.
