In this video I’m getting into the “why” behind one of the most common 3.6 Pentastar issues out there: the factory oil cooler / oil filter housing failure. If you’ve got a Dodge, Chrysler, or Jeep with the 3.6, you’ve got one of these sitting in the valley of the engine under the intake, and it doesn’t get much room to breathe. Mopar made the housing plastic to save weight and cost, and it actually does a decent job staying cooler—but that plastic is also the whole problem. Here’s what’s happening in real-world terms: you’ve got a plastic housing sandwiched between aluminum parts that heat up and cool down at a different rate. The seals and O-rings are thin, and they end up working overtime as everything expands and contracts, especially in winter. That’s why I see these failures spike this time of year—hot engine, cold overnight temps, and the plastic gets brittle faster than the aluminum around it. I also break down why I prefer the all-aluminum upgraded housings, what to watch out for with cheap “mystery box” Amazon options (wrong sensors, missing hardware, dried-out gaskets), and why labor cost can add up fast at dealer rates. Bottom line: check for leaks now, because low oil can turn into low oil pressure and bigger engine problems you don’t need.
