In this video I’m working on a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Sahara (JL) that came in with the dreaded steering wheel shake—aka death wobble. I’ve already got a step-by-step diagnostic video for death wobble, but this one was a unique bird because the root cause wasn’t the usual suspects. The real problem was an overlooked part Jeep quietly changed on the 2018–2019 era rigs: the aluminum steering gearbox. Chrysler thought aluminum was a great idea—lighter, cheaper, easier to manufacture—but in the real world these aluminum-cast gearboxes don’t hold up. They heat up and expand more than the old cast units, and that’s when the internal seals start letting go and the shaft develops slop. If your Jeep tracks weird, feels loose in the wheel, or starts shaking, this is one of the first things I want you to check on an 18–20 JL. Chrysler knew it too—by 2020 they went back to a cast unit. Once we swapped in a cast steel gearbox (this one’s a Detroit Axle rebuilt unit), I show you how to do a basic toe alignment at home with $25 alignment plates. Most shops set everything to 0.0, but on a solid axle Wrangler I like a slight toe adjustment to calm the shake down. End result: straight, tight steering—no vibration, no slop, and an absolute success.
