In this overnighter, I’m out in the mountains putting my Cloud 9 rooftop tent through real conditions—wind in the Alabama Hills, high-desert dust, and then a straight-up cold night after we left Vegas at 107° and watched it drop into the 50s (and colder). I let my buddy Chris sleep in the tent so I could get an honest take, and the big takeaway is simple: this thing is a legit game changer for camp setup. Between the RTT and the awning, we’re talking about a five-minute setup, and then we’re done—gear out, campfire going, hot dogs roasting, stories rolling. I also break down why I ended up with Cloud 9 in the first place. Chris was pushing me to find a CVT, but when those were nowhere to be found, I tracked down the owner who produced CVT and learned he’s behind the new Cloud 9 series—so that’s what I bought. I’m impressed with how easy it opens, how relatively lightweight it feels on the Jeep, and the fact that it hasn’t impacted my trail work or the training/education runs we do. The hard cover is a big deal too—when you’re in mud, snow, dust, and nasty weather, you pop it open and it’s clean and ready to go.
