In this video I’m inside my shop at J4B Overland Solutions with a blown-up 3.6L on the cherry picker, and I’m showing you a surefire way to kill a good engine: skipping basic maintenance—especially oil changes. I don’t care if you’ve got a 3.6, 3.8, 2.0 turbo, diesel, or even a 392… the principle is the same. Clean oil and a clean filter are what keep expensive moving parts alive, and once you start stretching intervals, you’re basically running contaminated oil through everything that needs lubrication. I walk you through what I found during teardown: scoring and residue inside the timing cover, tensioners that are either locked up or bouncing around, and timing marks that are way out of sync. I explain it in simple terms—oil pressure and clean lubrication matter because components like cam phasers and timing chain tensioners depend on it. When they don’t get what they need, timing can jump, and on an interference engine that can turn into a very expensive “boom boom” situation. We also pulled the vehicle history and found oil changes happening every 10–12k miles during its rental life—seven oil changes in the first 80k. That’s why I preach it: a $60–$80 oil change every 5,000 miles (or less) can save you from a $12,000 engine replacement.
