About This Video

In this video I break down the Sony MDR-MV1, a $400 “professional grade” open-back from Sony that I borrowed from my friend Mark (Super Review). Since it’s a loaner, there’s no full unboxing, but I go over what matters: comfort, pad swapping (which is actually easy and well-designed), the cable, and overall build. On-head, it’s light, comfy, and I really like the simple red/blue L/R indicators. The one annoyance is the cable only goes into the left cup—personally I’d prefer left/right entry options. Sound-wise, this headphone is a weird mix of “wow” and “why.” The bass is the star: it’s impactful, clean, and honestly rare for an open-back at this price—if I’m being a little hyperbolic, it’s some of the best bass under $400. But the treble can get bright, harsh, and peaky, and the midrange feels like it dips too early and then pops back in a way that doesn’t work for me. I also don’t think it opens up soundstage the way people expect. I show graphs on my rig and compare it to other sets to explain exactly where my issues are (that mid-treble/upper treble region). My final take: it’s a good, polarizing “Jekyll and Hyde” headphone with a cautious recommendation—way more compelling if you can grab it used or discounted, and I’d strongly suggest demoing or buying somewhere with returns.
