About This Video

In this bonus video I’m back at Tyninghame Beach, painting Bass Rock again—but this time I’m doing it as a vertical seascape. I’ve already done a horizontal version (I’ve linked it), and I thought it’d be useful to show how simply changing the format alters the whole feel of the scene. The painting is small—7" x 5" on Fabriano Artistico—so it’s all about keeping things direct, getting the big shapes in, and letting the watercolour do some of the work. I’m using my usual Winsor & Newton Artist-quality colours, keeping the palette fairly straightforward for sea, sky and that distant rock. With a vertical composition, I’m thinking more about movement and depth—how the eye travels through the painting—and I’m careful not to overwork the washes. If you’d like the chance to buy this one, just leave a comment on the video; I’m doing a draw next Sunday. I’m keeping the price low on these video paintings because I want to encourage people to have a go at watercolour, and anything raised goes straight back into making more videos and getting us out on more campervan trips.
