In this bonus video I’m back at Tyninghame Beach, painting Bass Rock again—but this time I’m doing it as a vertical seascape. I’ve already done a horizontal version (I’ve linked it), and I thought it’d be useful to show how simply changing the format alters the whole feel of the scene. The painting is small—7" x 5" on Fabriano Artistico—so it’s all about keeping things direct, getting the big shapes in, and letting the watercolour do some of the work. I’m using my usual Winsor & Newton Artist-quality colours, keeping the palette fairly straightforward for sea, sky and that distant rock. With a vertical composition, I’m thinking more about movement and depth—how the eye travels through the painting—and I’m careful not to overwork the washes.
