In this video I set myself a bit of a daft challenge: trying to paint moving clouds in watercolour while the weather does its best to get in the way. That’s the whole fun of plein air really—everything’s changing, the light won’t sit still, and you’ve got to make quick decisions and commit. I’m working on a 12" x 8" sheet of Fabriano Artistico and leaning into that “good enough” mindset with the sky, because if you chase every cloud you’ll never finish the painting. I talk through keeping the sky simple, watching the big shapes rather than the fussy edges, and using a limited set of mixes so I’m not constantly reinventing colour while the scene changes. The elements definitely made it more entertaining, but it’s a good reminder that a lively, honest painting often comes from responding to what’s in front of you rather than trying to control it.
