About This Video

We’re back home now, and in this video I take one of my North Beach sketches from Iona and turn it into a bigger, more impressionistic watercolour of those white sands and that unbelievable turquoise sea. I’m working on Fabriano Artistico 140lb NOT at 29" x 21", so I can really lean into big shapes, soft edges, and confident washes without getting too fussy about detail. The whole idea is to keep the feeling of being there—sunlight, colour temperature, and that bright Scottish clarity—rather than trying to describe every grain of sand. I show how I build the painting in stages: getting the main value pattern in early, keeping the beach clean, and then pushing the sea colour with blues and greens while still letting the paper do a lot of the work. I also talk through the colours I use from my Winsor & Newton Artist range, and how I simplify the scene so it reads from a distance. If you want to see where it all started, I’ve linked the original sketch video from Iona, and if you’re curious about my usual plein air watercolour kit, that’s linked as well.
