About This Video

In this one I head off on a wee solo road trip to Laide on the Gareloch peninsula, and I quickly realise just how much I rely on Tanya when we’re filming and painting together. I’m trying to be the driver, the painter, and the cameraman all at once—setting shots up, keeping an eye on the weather, and still getting myself into the right headspace to paint outdoors. It’s a proper “where’s Tanya when I need her?!” kind of day. The main focus is learning to juggle plein air painting with solo filmmaking: choosing a spot that works for the painting and the camera, keeping the kit simple enough to move, and not letting the technical side steal the joy of being out in the landscape. I talk through my approach to colour and the way I build a scene in watercolour (and the mindset that helps when things don’t go perfectly). If you’re trying to paint UK landscapes on location—or you’re thinking of filming your own painting trips—this video is really about making it doable, even when you’re on your own.
