About This Video

In this video I’m out on the River Garry at Killiecrankie (Perth and Kinross) doing the full, uncut watercolour painting—and it’s a good example of why plein air painting isn’t always easy. When you’re working on location you’re dealing with changing light, the weather doing what it wants, and the pressure of making decisions quickly. I talk you through how I simplify the scene, keep the composition under control, and focus on the big shapes first so I don’t get lost in detail. The painting itself is a 10" x 7" on Fabriano Artistico 140lb in natural white, and I’m using my Winsor & Newton Artist quality watercolours. I keep the palette fairly practical—earths for the banks and trunks, blues for the water and distance, and a few strong colours to nudge the temperature where it needs it. If you’re learning plein air, the main takeaway is to accept that the conditions won’t be perfect—so build a simple plan, stick to it, and let the place come through in the washes rather than overworking it.
