About This Video

In this video I’m out in the Scottish Borders doing a quick little watercolour of a distant hill. I keep it simple and focus on getting that feeling of space and atmosphere you get when the land rolls away from you—soft edges, gentle value changes, and just enough detail to suggest the landscape without overworking it. The painting is 10" x 7" on Fabriano Artistico, which is a size I really enjoy for these fast studies because you can get a complete piece done without getting bogged down. I’m using my Winsor & Newton Artists’ quality watercolours—an earth-and-blue heavy palette that’s perfect for UK landscapes. The main takeaway here is that you don’t need loads of fuss to make a believable hill: get your light wash in, let it dry, then build the darker shapes carefully and keep your colour mixes clean. I’m also starting to sell the paintings made in these videos at a low price to encourage people to have a go at watercolour, and the money goes straight back into making more videos and campervan trips with Tanya.
