About This Video

In this video I take you with us to my favourite island in Scotland — Iona — and we head up towards that absolutely stunning north beach. It’s one of those places that just doesn’t look real at times: white sand, turquoise water, and that big open Scottish light that’s a dream (and a challenge) if you’re a painter. The video is very much a relaxed tour of the island as we travel in the campervan with Tanya, soaking up the atmosphere and the colours you only seem to get on the west coast. From a painter’s point of view, Iona is all about keeping things simple: strong shapes, big value changes, and letting the sea and sky do the heavy lifting. Those pale sands and bright water can trick your eye, so I’m always thinking about where the darkest darks actually are, and how to stop the whole thing becoming washed out. If you’re planning a painting trip, this is the sort of location where a limited palette and a clear plan for your highlights will make life much easier — and it’s also just a brilliant place to slow down and enjoy being outside with a sketchbook.
