About This Video

On a properly cold day in Edinburgh, Tanya and I head into the National Gallery and spend a bit of time wandering around the newly renovated Scottish extension. I’m not painting in this one, but it’s still very much part of how I learn and stay excited about painting—standing in front of the real thing, looking at how other artists handle value, edges, colour temperature, and composition. When you’re out in the wind with a watercolour block or an oil pochade box, those decisions have to happen quickly, so I love coming back to galleries to slow down and really look. I chat through some of the paintings that grab me most, and why—especially the ones that feel like proper Scottish light: muted, changeable, and full of atmosphere. It’s the sort of viewing that feeds straight back into my plein air work from the campervan trips, whether I’m doing a beach, a seascape, or a moody landscape. If you enjoy these quieter “looking and talking” videos, I’ve linked another Edinburgh wander as well, and if you’d like to support the channel you can buy me a coffee—every bit goes back into making more van adventures and more painting trips.
