I’m using Winsor & Newton Artists’ quality watercolours, and I lean on a mix of earths and warm primaries. Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Cadmium Red and Alizarin Crimson give me the warmth, then Raw Umber/Burnt Umber help me neutralise and control the values. I’ll also bring in blues and a touch of violet for cooler shadow notes so the face doesn’t go flat.
