About This Video

In this video I paint a watercolour portrait of Charlie (one of my daughter’s boyfriends) and I do it all in one sitting. It’s a proper, straightforward portrait session with a live sitter—no endless tinkering—just getting the drawing in, finding the big shapes, and then building the head with clean washes and a few well-placed darker notes. The aim is to keep it fresh and believable, rather than overworking it, and Charlie was a great sitter which always helps. I’m working on 10" x 7" Fabriano Artistico 140lb NOT paper, and I’m using my Winsor & Newton Artists’ quality watercolours. The palette is a sensible mix of earths and blues for structure (Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Ultramarine/Cobalt/Cerulean) with a few warm accents for skin (Cadmium Yellow Pale, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson) and a touch of violet for those cooler shadows. It’s a Christmas present for his mum, so I’m also thinking about getting a good likeness and a pleasing finish without losing that watercolour sparkle.
