In this video Tanya and I change the routine a bit and do a proper walk in for the subject. We hike for about an hour up to Grey Mare’s Waterfall in the Scottish Borders, carrying all the kit, with the aim of doing a small plein air watercolour on location. I’m working on a 10" x 7" sheet of Fabriano Artistico 140lb in natural white, which is a great size for these sorts of trips because it keeps things manageable when you’ve got a climb ahead of you. The main takeaway is that finding fresh subjects sometimes means earning them—walking further, getting away from the easy roadside spots, and being willing to paint smaller and simpler when you’re hauling your gear. I keep the materials straightforward and reliable: Winsor & Newton Artist quality watercolours and a landscape-friendly palette that lets me handle the rocks, mossy greens, and cool water without overcomplicating it.
