We had a fantastic trip to Glencoe and we were blown away by its beauty. We've been to this part of the Highlands many times but never in the winter, what a spectacular treat we had. The only problem was that our heater in the van broke! If you have enjoyed my channel and would like to support it, 'buy me a coffee' is the perfect way to do so! All money donated goes back into making new videos and adventures in our van. Many thanks. https://www.buymeacoffee.com/jamespotter I use Winsor and Newton artists quality watercolour paints. The colours are (L-R) Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Ultra Marine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Veridian, Hooker's Green, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Violet, White, Ivory Black Winsor and Newton Artists Quality Paints 14ml Tubes Raw Umber https://amzn.to/3RbTsOp Burnt Sienna Burnt Umber https://amzn.to/4a80GeP Ultra Marine Blue Cobalt Blue https://amzn.to/47IwSEh Cerulean Blue https://amzn.to/3RuYS8A Cadmium Yellow Pale https://amzn.to/41d0IxW Yellow Ochre https://amzn.to/4a22mqx Raw Sienna https://amzn.to/47Z5Bh3 Cadmium Red https://amzn.to/4a5Gn1P Viridean Hooker's Green Alizarin Crimson https://amzn.to/46Ny2x1 Cobalt Violet https://amzn.to/3Tkbfp8 Chinese White https://amzn.to/485cBZi Mars Black https://amzn.to/4a81mAT Prints of all my paintings done on my channel are available from my website Contact me if you're interested in buying an original https://www.jamespotterart.co.uk https://www.instagram.com/jamespotteraboutart/ https://www.buymeacoffee.com/jamespotter

About This Video

In this video I take you with us up to Glencoe in December, and honestly it felt like seeing the place for the first time again. We’ve been to this part of the Highlands loads of times, but never in winter, and the combination of low light, snow-dusted shapes and that big, brooding atmosphere is just spectacular. I talk through what I’m looking for when I’m choosing a viewpoint in conditions like this—simple value shapes, a clear focal point, and a composition that reads quickly before the weather changes its mind. The trip wasn’t without its drama though: the heater in the van broke, which is the sort of thing that turns a “romantic winter painting trip” into a proper test. Even so, it’s a brilliant reminder that plein air isn’t about perfect comfort—it’s about being out there, reacting to what’s in front of you, and making the most of the moment. If you’re thinking of visiting Glencoe in winter, I share why December is such a good time for painters: fewer people, softer light, and landscapes that almost arrange themselves into paintable patterns.
