About This Video

Following on from the last video where I was scouting this spot, this one is the full plein air watercolour of a moving boat on Loch Peallach, on Mull. Painting anything that won’t sit still is always a bit of a juggling act outdoors, so I’m simplifying the shapes and values and committing to what matters: the light on the water, the big land masses, and the boat’s read at a glance. The aim isn’t a perfect portrait of the boat at one frozen moment—it’s a believable impression that still feels like that place. I’m working on Fabriano Artistico 140lb NOT at 20" x 13", using my usual Winsor & Newton Artists’ Quality palette. The key takeaway is to get your structure in early, keep the washes clean, and let the background do a lot of the heavy lifting so the boat doesn’t need fussy detail. If you want to see the kit I’m using when I’m out painting from the van with Tanya, I’ve linked my usual plein air watercolour setup as well—and if you’d like to support the channel and keep these trips going, Buy Me a Coffee really does go straight back into more painting adventures.
