But after filming travel adventures on GoPros for the last five years, our opinion has changed, and in this video we break down why the “GoPro era” might actually be over. We’re not here to hate—just to talk truth: the action cam market in 2023 is wildly competitive, the upgrades year-on-year feel marginal, and the price-to-value conversation is getting harder when other tools (and even full-frame cameras) are offering more for less. We also dig into the stuff that really riles people up: proven technical issues like overheating shutdowns, battery drain (yep, we’ve had Hero 10 batteries die fast in the cold), audio complaints, and connection problems when transferring files. At the same time, we give GoPro credit for publicly addressing issues and listening to customers. The biggest elephant in the room though is smartphones—versatility and convenience are pushing a lot of people to upgrade their phone before buying another action camera. Finally, we talk about “the offer”: bundles, subscriptions, and how products like 360 cams and drones can steal attention. Bottom line: GoPro can absolutely stay on top, but they need to keep innovating fast—because the competition is hot on their heels.
