About This Video

In this video, I’m equipping you with five cinematic iPhone shots you can use pretty much anywhere—whether you’re in moody low light, shooting a locked-off scene, or moving through a location for travel B-roll. Before we jump into the shots, I quickly run through the settings I actually use on the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max: 4K at 24fps for anything cinematic, moody, low-light, or tripod-locked, and 4K at 30 or 60fps when I’m moving the camera so I can slow it down and iron out wobbles in post. I also shoot ProRes on the 14 Pro for maximum dynamic range, but I’m real about it—ProRes absolutely chews up storage, so beginners can skip it. From there, I break down five must-know shots: using Cinematic Mode for a proper rack focus (and tweaking focus after capture), a clean pan (no tourist magic wand vibes) plus an optional masking pan transition, locked-off tripod shots for stability and composition (especially if you’re traveling solo), a rolling shot inspired by directors like Terrence Malick for dreamy movement and lens flares, and finally the tracking shot—the ultimate way to add story and energy, whether you’re following a subject or having them track you. Pair it all with the right music, and your iPhone footage instantly levels up.
