About This Video

In this video I’m checking out the Tone King Royalist, and it’s actually a subscriber request—someone hit me up and said, “Dude, this is in your Marshall wheelhouse.” They were right. The Royalist is basically a pro “amp in a box” built around the Tone King Royalist amp concept: three modes that cover that classic Marshall-flavored spread from JTM45 vibes to Plexi to a more hot-rodded Plexi thing. I also really like that it has two identical channels, because you can set up clean/crunch, crunch/lead, or even run a clean base and just hit it with a boost. I walk through clean and pushed-clean tones, then overdrive and boosted sounds, and I’m using the pedal’s own reverb so you’re hearing what’s actually in the box—no post reverb tricks. I also swap the stock IRs for a Friedman-style 4x12 Vintage 30 cab IR (same software ecosystem as the Friedman IR pedals), then later I bypass the Royalist IRs and run into the UA OX Stomp for cab sim. The OX adds depth and flexibility, but I did run into some “pointy” top end when stacking my Brothers drive into the OX on the clean channel—so I show what worked, what didn’t, and how changing mode/mic placement helped. Overall: killer feature set, legit tones, and a very real “this could be your whole rig to the PA” kind of pedal.
