About This Video

In this video I’m digging into the Marshall Studio Vintage SV20 — aka the “little baby Plexi.” Zzounds sent it over so I could do what I always do: play it in the studio, then take it to a real gig and report back with zero hype. I walk through the basics (it’s a straightforward Plexi layout with four inputs, an effects loop, and speaker outs), and I show how the two loudness controls interact — Loudness I being more bright/cutting, Loudness II being fatter with more low-end emphasis. That blendability is one of the biggest reasons I love Plexi-style amps. The big takeaway: this thing has a lot of gain on tap and honestly doesn’t need a boost pedal. If you do boost it, a light push is all it wants. On stage with my ’90s/2000s rock cover band, it sat in the mix perfectly and had no problem getting to a usable stage volume, especially with the PA doing the heavy lifting like most gigs. The trade-off versus a 50/100-watt Plexi or my 100-watt Ceriatone 800 (in 50-watt mode) is the feel — at similar dB, the SV20 doesn’t have the same punch, weight, and authority. Physics is physics. I also compare high vs low power mode so you can hear the big volume drop and focus on how the feel/structure changes.
