In this video I’m taking a real, no-hype listen to the EVH 50W EL34 head, because I think it’s gotten a bad rap—mostly because people love to trash the Blue channel. I get why: the Blue channel is voiced softer and warmer, and if you’re trying to do modern heavy metal with it, the complaints are 100% accurate. But that’s also kind of the point—this version feels aimed at classic rock, blues, and lower-gain stuff, and I actually think the Blue channel is genuinely good if you keep the gain low and play into what it does well. I run the amp with my Tokai loaded with Sheptone BK PAFs, a Chase Bliss Brothers AM out front, and a UA Del-Verb in the loop (and yes, the footswitchable loop makes that super practical). I walk through Green, Blue, and Red channels, and I focus a lot on usable gain down around 9:00–10:00 because these EVH amps have a ton of gain on tap, but the sweet spot for me is lower—especially if you want headroom for a boost. Big takeaway: the EL34 Blue channel can get “blanket over the speakers” if you push the gain, and there’s a real balancing act between getting enough presence on Blue without making Red too aggressive. I can get great sounds out of it, but for my stage needs I can get the same sounds easier from the 6L6 version or the Stealth—unless you buy this one cheap used and you’re cool with the common C137 clip mod.
