About This Video

In this video I’m digging into the Synergy Diezel VH4 module, and I’m doing it the way I always try to do these reviews: I ran it in the studio, took it on an actual gig, and then brought it back for a post-gig report. If you’re new to Synergy, these are modular preamps that slot into stuff like the SYN-20 head (what I used here), the 50-watt head, rack units, and even a little desktop module. This VH4 module was helped along by Peter Diezel himself, so the big question is: how close does it get to the real deal and how does it behave when it actually has to work on stage? For the demo, I used the SYN-20’s reactance and power structure controls to fine-tune the feel and overall structure in a way you can’t really do with the standalone module formats. I ran my Origin Effects Halcyon Green in front (it’s by far my favorite drive into a VH4-style setup), into my Splawn 4x12, V30, SM57. Tonally, it absolutely gets the vibe right—especially on the higher gain side—and channel two felt the most familiar to me. My main gripe is that the two module channels are identical; I really wish channel one was voiced more like channel 2 of the actual VH4 with that punchier, snarling upper-mid attack. Even so, it worked great on stage and it’s a pretty wild “three-channel” gigging package when you factor in the SYN-20’s built-in clean channel.
