About This Video

In this video I put the Friedman Jake E Lee 50w (JEL50) through my usual routine: studio demos first, then a real gig with my 90s/2000s rock cover band. If you’re in a hurry, here’s the deal—this amp really does deliver. Channel 1 nails that old-school, chewy Plexi thing and it’ll go from warm cleans to edge-of-breakup to classic rock crunch on one channel, with dynamics that get more saturated as you turn it up like a real Plexi. Channel 2 is where the “hot-rodded” side shows up: a killer 80s high-gain rock sound with that upper-mid snarl and bite like an 800. I walk through the three-way bright switches and how they matter most at lower gain settings, plus the push/pull gain boost if you want more without running pedals. Personally, I still prefer hitting it with a boost pedal to keep more of the amp’s natural low end and lower mids. Then I give you the post-gig report: the tones on stage were some of the most impressive I’ve had, but this thing is freakishly loud and I really think it needs a master volume. If you’re buying this (or the Smallbox), budget for an attenuator—because the best sounds come at the cost of insane decibels.
