About This Video

In this video I’m doing a full review of the Friedman JEL 20 (the little 20 watt Jake E. Lee head), and I’m focusing on what it actually does in the real world—tone, flexibility, and whether it makes sense versus bigger amps. I’ve already compared it to the 20w JCM800 and also to the 50w JEL, so here I’m digging into the features and walking through both channels, the 3-way bright switch on Channel 1, and the different gain options on Channel 2 (pull boost and the gain switch that adds a different feel/structure to the gain). Signal chain for the demos is Lizzy Hale Explorer → Boss SD-1W → JEL20 → Splawn cab with a V30, mic’d with an SM57 and MD421. Channel 1 goes from clean-ish to crunchy rock, and it’ll get into that alt rock / ’90s grunge zone without needing pedals. Channel 2 is where the “full gain” thing lives, and I show how it behaves at different gain levels, dimed settings, and boosted with the SD-1W. I also demo the XLR direct out with the cab disconnected (cone vs edge setting), because that feature is a huge part of why this amp makes sense for bedroom players and for stages that want lower volume or silent stage setups. My overall takeaway: these 20 watt heads are totally viable on stage, but they won’t have the punch/authority of 50w+ amps at the same volume. For most players who don’t need to be insanely loud, I honestly like the JEL20 more than the 50w version because it’s cheaper and has a ton of usable flexibility (especially the direct out and gain-structure options).
