About This Video

In this video I’m doing a full review of the Marshall JCM800 Studio Classic 20w head (the “baby 800”). Zzounds loaned it to me, and I ran it the way I’d actually use it: Lizzy Hale Explorer into the head, with a Boss Waza SD-1w up front, into a Splawn cab with a V30, mic’d with an SM57 and an MD421. I walk through the setup and quick specs (EL34 power section, high/low inputs, effects loop), then I demo the low sensitivity input, the high sensitivity input, and how the master volume vs the preamp gain changes the feel and the gain structure. From there I hit it with the SD-1w, mess with the pedal’s modes, and show how quiet and stable the rig stays even when it’s cranked and boosted. I also flip between the low power mode and full power, and the big takeaway is the tone/feel didn’t really change—“it just got quieter,” which is exactly what I want. I wrap up with real talk on stage use: it’ll work and it’s loud enough, but it doesn’t have the same authority as a 50w/100w head (physics). If you want the unfiltered, pure JCM800 blueprint sound in a smaller, more manageable format, this thing absolutely delivers—just know it still likes to be turned up, and for apartments I’d plan on a load box/attenuator.
