About This Video

Well, this officially makes me a guitar YouTuber—I finally sat in front of a camera with a Balaguer and figured out why so many players keep showing up with these things. In this video I’m checking out a white Balaguer Seraph Modern that Joe himself built. It’s a 25.5" scale, alder body, 24 stainless frets, Hipshot fixed bridge, Hipshot open-gear locking tuners, Graph Tech nut, and a roasted flame maple board/neck that looks and feels absolutely killer. I also walk through the 5-way wiring and how the splits and full humbuckers are laid out. For tones, I ran it into my VH4 with a Splawn cab loaded with a Scumback H75, mic’d with an MD421, with the Origin Effects Halcyon Green Drive on tap and delay/verb in the loop. I go through cleans (including delay/chorus vibes), crunch, boosted crunch, and then channels 3 and 4 boosted/unboosted—including a quick drop-tuning pass and some pointless lead wanking. Biggest takeaway: the bridge pickup is bright but still smooth and creamy, and it stays clear under stupid amounts of gain without getting fizzy. I did find the neck pickup a bit dark at first, but raising it brought back the bite I like. My only real nitpick is I’d personally rather have a 3-way toggle than a blade switch, but overall this thing is a truly excellent guitar with awesome upper-fret access and rock-solid tuning stability.
