About This Video

Special delivery from Legendary Tones—your boy got the golden ticket. In this video I’m testing the Legendary Tones 1987 Caswell module in my Marshall Studio JCM800, and I’m doing it the way I think these things should be evaluated: real playing, real comparisons, and no hype. This limited run is loaded with a Philips NOS 1287 (normally a $40 upgrade), and the goal here is simple—what does it actually do for gain, feel, and the overall “Appetite-era” JCM800 mod vibe? I start by letting you hear the Studio JCM800 completely stock so you’ve got a baseline, then I walk you through the install. The whole point is you’re not disassembling the amp and you’re not soldering anything—this replaces a preamp tube, and on the 20-watt Marshall you just remove a small bracket to make room. From there I demo the module at low gain, bring in the thump switch (huge difference), push the module gain up, and then hit the bite switch to show how the upper-mid snarl and cut changes. My main takeaway: it adds more gain, but the bigger deal is the low-end beef without getting flabby or losing definition. For studio/bedroom use, that extra clean, clear low end is a big deal, and at around $350 it’s cheaper and easier than sending your amp off to a tech.
