About This Video

In this video I put the “baby” Friedman Jake E Lee 20 and the Marshall JCM800 20 head-to-head, with everything set up to keep it as fair as possible. Both amps are running into my KHE amp switcher so I can flip instantly, and they’re both hitting the same Splawn 4x12 with a V30, mic’d with a 421 and an SM57. I kept the EQ controls roughly matched and the volumes lined up so you can actually hear the voicing differences instead of getting fooled by loudness. I also had a Boss SD-1W on deck (because apparently it’s illegal to own a JCM800 without one), and a Del-Verb in both loops, but I mostly stayed focused on the amps. Tone-wise, they’re cut from the same cloth, but they don’t behave the same. The Friedman has more low end, can get brighter, and gives you way more gain options thanks to the saturation mode and built-in gain boost (I don’t love stacking both at once—more of a “pick one” thing). The Marshall stays cleaner and crisper when you push it to the limits, but you’re giving up low end and overall gain. Feature-wise, the Friedman is a two-channel amp and it can run cabless with an internal load, while the Marshall is more old-school and you’ll need an external load/DI solution if you want to go silent or direct.
