In this video, I show you how to test and replace your air conditioner Capacitor yourself. This is the most common repair on a home AC unit. The constant on and off of the air conditioner causes your capacitor to go bad eventually and it will need replaced. I show you how to test your current capacitor, identify which one you need to buy, and replace it on your air conditioner. About This Video

It’s been super hot this summer, and that means your AC is cycling on and off all day—aka putting a ton of strain on one of the most common failure points: the capacitor. In this video I show you how I diagnosed my own unit when the thermostat said it was on, but the vents were blowing warm air. Outside, I could hear the compressor buzzing, but the fan wasn’t spinning, which is a big clue on a dual run capacitor (it powers the fan and the compressor). I also break down the three common “bad capacitor” scenarios: fan runs but compressor doesn’t, compressor runs but fan doesn’t, or neither one runs. I walk you through doing this safely—killing power at the disconnect, pulling the service panel, and discharging the capacitor with an insulated screwdriver before you touch anything. Then I show you how to identify the right replacement by reading the label (mine was a 45/5 dual run with a 6% tolerance), plus how to test it with a meter. The whole point is saving money: instead of paying $300–$400 (or way more after hours), you can usually fix this yourself with a $10–$40 part. And if your label is worn off, I show you how to look it up by model number so you can order the right one.
