About This Video

On this 2021 Toyota Highlander (same process for 2021-2023), the power liftgate was doing that annoying thing where it starts to open, then you basically have to hold it and pull it all the way up. In this video I walk you through replacing the power liftgate struts (the ones with the wire) step-by-step. I show you where the struts mount (top and bottom ball studs), how the little metal retaining clips work, and how to get to the electrical connector by popping the access panels so you can unplug it and feed the wiring/grommet through. I also cover the simple tools that make this job easier, like plastic trim tools to remove the interior access covers without trashing your panels, plus a pick/flathead to lift the clip. Big takeaway: do one strut at a time and be ready to support the hatch—once you pop a strut off, the liftgate will start coming down. After installing the left/right strut correctly (cord up top), I show the “moment of truth” test and how to reset the liftgate height by holding the button until it beeps and then letting it relearn the open height.
